For someone who long and short-term memory may be decaying because of major depression is it good to consult with a neurologist?

Yes: After you consult a psychiatrist and start treatment these symptoms should improve. If they do not, your psychiatrist will suggest psychological testing (neurospych tests) to clarify the processing problems you are having. Based on the results of those tests, you may be referred to a Neurologist if the findings seem out of the range expected for your psychiatric disorder.
