A member asked:

Can a woman with ongoing clinical depression be a good mom? my psych and gyno think so. but my neurologist says i should wait. have 5 yr dep. already.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No pat answer: It depends on the person and the depression. If you are able to function, work, relate normally to other people, then you will likely be able to care for a child as well. Talk to your neurologist and find out what s/he sees that is causing concern. I'm suspicious if your depression has not improved in 5 years-- that suggests it may be time to consider a different treatment or different psych.
