Had an elevated wbc at 12.6 with neutrophils at 96%. does this mean bacterial or viral infection?

Can't say: The blood count alone is not sufficient to differentiate between viral and bacterial infections. The clinical history and exam are necessary along with other tests to make a firm diagnosis.

It depends: on the timing of the blood sample. Neutrophils are typically elevated w/ bacterial infections & Lymphocytes are associated w/ viral infections. However, early on in the course of an illness, and with certain stress reactions, there can be a predominance of Neutrophils as well. The most important thing to me as a physician, is the clinical appearance of patients. Discuss this w/ your physician.
