A member asked:

Im trying to remember how to piggy back motrin and tylonol for my 2 year old. her fever keeps coming back. is it every 4 hours?

Fever relief: I typically tell my patients to alternate tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin every three hours, That way they are getting tylenol (acetaminophen) every six hours and motrin every 6 hours, but each medicine is three hours apart.

I usually don't: I suggest the parents pick one or the other, using whichever seems to give more relief on the basic schedule of the med. Alternating is usually a waste of time.Fever slows the reproduction of germs, so it is not the enemy in illness. Pain or discomfort will reduce a kids ability to keep up with their fluids, so I focus on pain.
