A member asked:

Are all the medications that i'm taking as maintenance nephrotoxic? if yes, why did my doctor who is a nephrologist prescribe them?

Nephrotoxicity: none of the medications that you listed are nephrotixic. Gemfibrozil may be nephrotixic indirectly by causing rhabdomyolysis-muscle injury, which subsequently can cause renal injury

Renal protective: Most medications are metabolized via the liver or kidney or both. Metoprolol is a beta-blocker. There is now research suggesting a nephroprotective effect from cyclosporine. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21885994 Gemfibrozil has been shown to protect the kidney from cis-platinum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11096145 http://www.ajol.info/index.php/aju/article/viewFile/98484/87758
