A member asked:

How sure can a rad and pathologist be when doing a fna that it's prob ok just by looking at it in vial with naked eye without microscope?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No dx: The diagnosis of a lesion is best made by excisional biopsy. This requires microscopic examination frequently using different monoclonals for evaluation of the tumor. FNA is not preferred in most casts but rather a core biopsy that can be taken with a wide needle. When FNA performed it is usually smeared on a slide and not examined in a vial of fixative.
