Replacement: After your thyroid is removed, you should take thyroid pill as hormone replacement. You will need periodic blood testing until the right dose is found. After that, you stay on the dose and medication for the rest of your life. It's not a hard process.

Levothyroxine: This is thyroid hormone replacement you take daily in pill form. It is the long term treatment. For some, cytomel, (liothyronine) or T3 may be given adjuvantly as it kicks in sooner than the T4 (levothyroxine). It is usually stopped once you've been on T4 long enough for it to take effect.
