Muscle guarding: "muscle guarding" refers to the automatic reaction of abdominal muscles to tighten and protect the deeper abdomen from being palpated during an exam because there is some inflammatory process in the abdomen. It is easy to elicit. Just lie down, relax your belly, and have a friend gently press on your abdomen with a flat palm. If your abdominal muscles automatically tighten, you've got guarding.
