Neither: Both horse chestnut extract (active ingredient aescin) and diosmin seem beneficial for chronic venous insufficiency, where decreased tone in the leg veins cause lower leg swelling. Varicose veins, however, require procedures to remove or close the unsightly veins. Prevention includes weight loss, activities improving blood flow & leg muscle tone, avoiding prolonged standing & crossed-leg sitting.

Vein evaluation.: There is no medical evidence to document that horse chestnut will improve the appearance of varicose veins. Homeopathic supplements such as horse chestnut, escin, diosmin and bioflavonoids are just that-supplements. They are not 1st line treatment for varicose veins. It would be prudent for you to have a venous evaluation by a vein specialist.

Medication for veins: Various medications and herbs have been felt to be beneficial for varicose and spider veins. Called venotonics, they generally reduce inflammation and increase the tone of vein walls. Lots of foreign research on diosmin details antiinflammatory properties. Horse chestnut extract and rutin are reputed to increase venous tone. Appearance improvement is minor. Sclerotherapy injections work best.
