Hematologist told me ultrasound technicians stop investigating ssv at middle calf because vessels any lower are difficult to see. is this true?

Yes: The further down the leg you go the smaller the vessels get. The superficial vessels are usually visible, but the deep vessels get so small that they are hard to visualize and compression testing of them is difficult.
