Medications: Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) have shown some benefit in diminishing the depression symptoms in bipolar disorder. However, the standard for treatment remains medication. Bipolar disorder is a progressive disorder that will worsen over time without effective treatment. There are several medications and medication combinations that have been shown to be effective. Talk with your md.

Bipolar Tx: Mood stabilizers are the cornerstone of tx. Also, antidepressants used cautiously in the depressed phase, as well as cautious use of anxiolytics for agitation, along with antipsychotics for disturbed thought patterns. There is also important role of psychotherapy, family therapy & group counseling. Cases resistent to the above tx, have been referred for ect.
