Ouch!: Even minor injury can cause back pain,There are many muscles in the back, Stress or stretch one of them in the wrong way and the pain can stop you in your tracks. Most of the time it's just a minor muscle strain But the strain causes pain, the pain causes tension & tension causes more pain. It usually resolves w/ a few days of "taking it easy", OTC pain relievers, heat and gentle stretching.

Muscle spasm: Apply cold or heat for your acute pain relief. You may also take either acetaminophen or an NSAID like naproxen (not both!). Keep lightly active. Then when better - about 2days to 1-2 weeks - begin regular core-strengthening exercises. Hope that helps.
