A member asked:

Baby umbilical hernia swollen, will this give any problem and any pain to baby due to swollen? and will this stay swollen even when my baby grow up.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It depends.: Hernias in infants are not uncommon, and often close on their own. Your pediatrician should evaluate it as the baby grows to see if it is still present. If it persists, the hernia will need to be repaired eventually. However, if the hernia becomes hard, red, or very tender to the touch, it needs to be evaluated immediately in the emergency room to make sure it is not incarcerated.
