Sprain vs ?: Swelling and prolonged pain in an affected finger that you jammed from a fall sounds more like a sprained thumb, a stretch or tear of the appropriate ligament, rather that a dislocated or broken joint or bone. Make sure you see an orthopedic hand specialist, possibly get an X-Ray or ultrasound, or a scan, if necessary
