How quickly do signs of head injury in a child develop after hitting their head? is it usually fairly quick?

Depends: Sorry for the vague answer but it depends on the injury. Children may develop signs and symptoms quickly, but you generally have to watch them for at least 24 hours after any significant trauma to make sure that they don't develop any problems.

Not always: If your child hits his/her head look for loss of consciousness and how long. Observe for any vomiting, increasing head pain or change in behavior. If any of these symptoms occur have him seen immediately. Some injuries will present with a lucent period before the above symptoms occur. Some complications of head injuries may occur within 24-48 hours others longer.
