how quickly do signs of head injury in a child develop after hitting their head? is it usually fairly quick?

Depends: Sorry for the vague answer but it depends on the injury. Children may develop signs and symptoms quickly, but you generally have to watch them for at least 24 hours after any significant trauma to make sure that they don't develop any problems.
