Depends on cause: Strep throat is diagnosed w/swab & is treated w/ antibiotics. However, the cipro (ciprofloxacin) you're on does not kill strep. Best is penicillin or cephalosporin. If allergic, then azithromycin or clindamycin. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, especially when there's cough. Antibiotics won't help &can cause complications. There are no effective cough medicines. Warm salt water gargle can help sore throat

R/O Strep: It would be a good idea to rule out recurrent strep throat and if there, treat with antibiotics prescribed. In the meantime, warm salt water gargles, chloraseptic spray, herbal tea with lemon and honey, avoid spicy and citrus foods, OTC pain relievers as needed. Ice cream or cold drinks if helpful.
