Gingivitis: Infection of gum tissue caused by bacteria. In other words if you are not cleaning your mouth properly the tissues will get red, swollen, sore. Smoke, containing nicotine, makes tissues more susceptible to the enzymes and toxins produced by the bacteria. Nicotine in gum is irritating, but not as much as nicotine containing cigarette smoke. Quitting is very hard, but your body will thank you.
