No: It sounds like his teeth need major restoration. The dentist will help with pain and anxiety management. Be sure he practices good hygiene to avoid this again. All the best, he will be safe.

Perfectly Safe: The procedures are very safe, so don't worry. In the future, the child should be seen every six months by a dentist for an exam and cleaning... this is routine care. Excellent home brushing and flossing and a balanced diet should also be enforced. Children need guidance in these matters.

Consider 2nd opinion: II years old...quite young for these issues. If the teeth are going to be restored, a change in home care and responsibility needs to placed upon the the 11 year old. Sure the parents need to be quite involved, but it is time to decide on helping her. She can get other illnesses and infections if the teeth are not restored.

Root canal hazards: While many mainstream dentists & doctors consider root canals benign, there is evidence that they tend to harbor chronic infections that can place stress on one's system. See http://www.westonaprice.org/holistic-healthcare/root-canal-dangers/ Clearly some with root canals enjoy good health & with optimal technique the hazards are less. Other options include trying to save the tooth or pulling it.
