Transforaminal inj.: The needle is placed into the foramen for epidural steroid injection (ESI) for both, and steroids are injected. If a block, SNRB is performed, then an anesthetic is injected too. Some physicians also inject an anesthetic for the transforaminal ESI. So depending on what is injected, there may not be a difference. If steroids are injected, up to 3 injections in a year are recommended; some say 6.
