PCOS: PCOS is a condition where ovulation is essentially not occurring, but cysts form in the ovaries secondary to incomplete (failed) ovulation efforts. It usually causes very abnormal to absent menstrual cycles. There are agents to assist with ovulation, and others to produce withdrawal bleeding which prevents some effects of long term PCOS. Hysterectomy is not the only solution.

No: Medical treatment is definitely an option. Ovarian drilling and wedge resection are also surgical options. Exercise and weight loss can help reverse the hormonal changes too. Insulin resistance is frequently associated with PCOS and insulin sensitizing meds can help and make it easier to loose weight decreasing the risk of developing diabetes. Good luck.
