Oligoclonal bands: The presence of oligoclonal bands can occur with several conditions including multiple sclerosis. An MRI may reveal charicteristic "plaques" (demylenation) on the nerve cells (neurons) with multiplesclerosis. More information is needed since other conditions can cause similar findings.

My thoughts: Cannot truly explain what your doctor is "looking for", but typically, oligoclonal band testing assists in confirming multiple sclerosis, if elevated in spinal fluid. Your spinal fluid protein is increased, but that could be due to your thyroid issues, or variety of other problems such as diabetes. Recommend you spend some time with your doctor and discuss all of this in great detail.

Inflammation: The spinal tap is done to evaluate for infection, inflammation or overactive immune system. A protein of 66 is a little bit high and can be seen with lots of conditions. Oligoclonal bands in the spinal fluid that aren't present in the serum are associated with immune hyperactivity like exposure to virus' and multiple sclerosis. The absence of oligoclonal bands in the spinal fluid isn't helpful.

Complicated: Your doctor is checking your central nervous system. There are many possible reasons which I will not spell out for you. I think you better have a face to face with your doctor show she can explain what it all means or does not mean. for oligoclonal bands
