Gum infection: Sounds like you have an inflammation of your gums perhaps due to the braces! See your orthodontist sooner than your next regular appointment meantime salt water rinses may help!. Hope this helps Dr Z

Gingivitis: The inflamed gums can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, gum disease. The bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, forms a sticky, colorless toxic “plaque” causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed. This is a serious problem, which should be checked by a dentist. The good news is that this condition is curable. Call your dentist today!

See your dentist: It is not normal for the gums to grow over your braces if they are health. You need to see your dentist and orthodontist.

What to do:: From your description it sounds like you need to practice better oral hygiene, both brushing and flossing and limiting sticky starchy and sugary foods that promote bacterial plaques which produce toxins and acids that irritate the gums and promote tooth decay. Speak to both your General Dentist and Orthodontist about this. They can help you maintain a healthier mouth.

Braces: Have you had your teeth cleaned while you have your braces? Are you brushing and flossing as directed by your orthodontist? See your orthodontist or your general dentist about this. Both working together can help you. You also need to do your part.

2 possibilities: VERY rarely the problem is an allergic response to the nickel in the stainless steel braces or to the latex ties. Your Orthodontic Specialist may want you to see an Allergist. More probably your gums are infected from the bacteria coating your teeth/braces due to poor oral hygiene. Your Orthodontist may collaborate with your General Dentist and/ or a Periodontist to resolve the infected tissues
