Can anything bad happen if the vascular surgeon attempts to strip the saphenous veins and they contain an undiagnosed clot?

No: The veins they strip are superficial and not the deep veins . It is clots in the deep veins one worries about, esp if the clot is above the level of the knee. Good luck.
