Pacemakers: It depends on the age of the patient, overall health of the patient, and probably most importantly, what type of heart problem the pacemaker was used to treat and what caused the heart problem.

It Varies.: If heart block is the only cardiac issue, a pacemaker should fully correct this and cause no shortening of a person's life expectancy.
