A 23-year-old female asked:
what is considered an irregular heart rate?

Dr. Ian Weisberg answered
Cardiac Electrophysiology 19 years experience
Depends: Irregular means a constant variation in heart rate or can be caused by frequent early/premature beats. Young people however can have a moderate variation in heart rate just by breathing in and out so consult your physician to find out if yours is abnormally irregular if you are concerned

A 41-year-old member asked:
Is there a difference between an irregular pulse & an irregular heart rate?
1 doctor answer • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Bennett Werner answered
Cardiology 44 years experience
No, technically yes: They both indicate an irregularity of your heart's rhythm. If you listen at your chest, you actually hear the heart beats. If you check a peripheral pulse, you're feeling the momentary arterial bulge that results from the heart beat. Special case: in atrial fibrillation, the pulse rate will always be "slower" than the hr because some beats aren't transmitted.

A 41-year-old member asked:
What would cause me to have an irregular heart rate?
1 doctor answer • 5 doctors weighed in

Dr. James Strader answered
Cardiology 22 years experience
Lots of things: We have about 100, 000 heart beats / day. It is typically to have a few dozen to few hundred extra / skipped beats, just by the law of averages. There are lots of abnormal conditions, however, that can cause irregularity above that normal range. If you are experiencing this routinely, see your cardiologist for a full evaluation.

Rate: A low and irregular heart rate of 41 would often be due to atrial fibrillation with high degree av block. Hypothyroidism would be a common cause of such a problem.

A 23-year-old female asked:
What is an example of irregular heart rate My heart rate vary between 60&96.is it considered irregular)?

Dr. Robert Kwok answered

Depends on activity: If there are emotional or physical activities going on, or pain, then one's heart rate must vary. No human has a constant heart rate unless her body and mind are, shall we say, sedated. Irregular is when the beat changes without the normal reasons for a beat to go slower or faster... sort of like the difference between listening to drum music and listening to somebody randomly hitting the drums.
