Get treatment now: Tongue lacerations generally bleed significantly. He should go to an emergency rooma nd get evaluated and treated.

It depends: If the injury has just recently occurred and is very deep, he should get stitches. The main reason to stitch a tongue wound is to prevent food trapping, which can cause infection. If your boyfriend is stubborn and refuses to go, have him use a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, 1/2 water, 1/2 hydrogen peroxide, at least twice a day and inspect the wound for retained food. Good luck.
