Possibly: This sounds like herpes simplex or a cold sore. The virus is contagious. Let the Mom know so she can watch for symptoms. A first time herpes infection may cause blisters around the month and in the mouth as well as swelling of the gingiva. It can be treated if it is diagnosed within the 1st 48 hours.

Yes: The baby can catch it and could possibly lead to more than just cold sores. The mom of the baby should call her pediatrician for advice.
