AF AND HEART DAMAGE: AF may result in weakness of the heart muscle- called tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy- if rate control is poor, and person is experiencing frequent or chronic elevations in their heart rate. AF that is controlled with medications is not likely to result in such occurence. More commonly, AF arises as a result of structural heart disease, such as having a leaky mitral valve, or changes due to BP.
