Gingivitis: Gingivitis is caused by bacterial inflammation of the gum tissues. Remove the bacteria (proper brushing, flossing, and almost any mouthwash if you like) will help alleviate your symptoms. Hardened colonies (calculus) needs to be scraped off by a dentist or hygienist... all the brushing and mouthwash in the world won't remove it.
