Tooth infection: It can take 24 to 48 hours for an antibiotic to take effect. You have not noticed any improvement in your symptoms yet, so the best thing to do is to see the prescribing dentist to reevaluate your condition. Options would be to change the antibiotic or take action and remove the infected tooth or do,the root canal if it can be treated.

Need Rx: Antibiotics should work in 2-3 days to limit spread of infection and reduce pain. As it has been longer than that for you you may need change of antibiotic. Antibiotics do NOT cure infected teeth. Root canal Rx or extraction is required. Please call your Dentist NOW for appointment to help you address this problem before the infection gets out of control.

24 to 72 hours: Antibiotics can start providing relief anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. If you don't have any relief by 72 hours you should call your dentist as you might need a different antibiotic or an emergency dental treatment. For temporary relief you can take OTC NSAIDs or Tylenol (acetaminophen). The only way to cure a dental infection is with dental treatment.
