Otitis externa: The wax most likely softened and is now abutting the tympanic membrane (ear drum) or occluding the ear canal. Moisture accumulating behind the obstruction creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi resulting in ear canal inflammation and possible infection. The wax should be removed and probable treatment with antibiotic ear drops.
