A member asked:

Is it possible that post appendectomy surgery (40 years later) have anything to do with my condition; diarrhea that is severe, least 3 days a week?

Possibly: The only correlation here could be scar tissue or adhesions from the old surgery. This can sometimes affect bowel flow. Typically it is constipation, pain or complete obstruction that people complain of. Diarrhea is less commonly associated with adhesions. Please see your doctor for more thorough evaluation to help you feel good.

No: If your surgery was 40 years ago and this is your first episodes of diarrhea, it is unlikely to have anything at all to do with your previous surgery. It is important to find out what is the cause of your diarrhea though. Please see you doc or a GI specialist for a complete exam and treatment.

Unlikely: Your appendectomy 40 years ago is not likely to be the cause of diarrhea in currently.
