Musculoskeletal: The fact that the pain gets better on its own after a while, speaks to muscle-bone pain that abates. Since it is noticeable after awakening, perhaps you should try changing the position you sleep in and see if that helps. Is the pain on one side of rib cage, then sleep on other side or try sleeping on your stomach.
