Ankle sprains: Ankle sprains can be quite painful, leading many people to feel they may have a fracture. Usually the best course of action is applying ice packs for 20 minutes 2-3 times daily for a few days, compressing with an ACE wrap, keeping it elevated, and avoiding excessive weight bearing. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after several days, an xray might be necessary.

Ankle: There are ligaments that attach the two bones (tibia [inside] and fibula [outside]) to the ankle bones and with this type injury these ligaments get stretched and sometimes sustain minor tears and that causes the pain and swelling. The best thing is: rest, elevation, ice and time until all the swelling is gone. If pain is not improving in the next few days see an Orthopedic physician
