Many, maybe most: Depressions can be relieved w/out medications unless they are severe or complicated by psychotic features. Even those, IMHO will respond better if high quality talk therapy (CBT or appropriate type) is added in a meaningful manner. It is challenging at times and that could be a reason for a brief time w/ short-term meds to provide the clarity and energy needed. But it teaches life skills.

Yes: For many depression is like a cold and will pass on its own without any medication. For others the depression causes such a chemical imbalance tht drugs are the only solution is medication. For others medication doesn't work and they need electroshock. others comit suicide and die of it In that way it is like a cold, pneumonia., lung disease. many people need to stay on medication forever.
