Esophageal cancer: According to cancer statistics monitoring (SEER), there will be about 18000 new cases of esophageal cancer in 2014 (in the U.S.). This accounts for about 1 % of all cancers, so it is relatively rare. Hope that answers your question!

Relatively rare: Esophageal cancer is relatively rare. Risk factors are tobacco and alcohol. A condition called Barrett's esophagus, in which the cells lining the esophagus are abnormal, is also a risk factor. The usual symptom is trouble swallowing. The diagnosis is made by endoscopy.
