Varicose veins: Both superficial and deep veins are identified on ultrasound examination [venous doppler exam]. Clots or obstruction in either system of veins can be identified. They can also be identified in arteries, which are larger and also the pressure of the blood flow can be identified in both.

Veins superficial: Varicose veins are by definition superficial.Types of veins are superficial, deep, and perforating veins connecting the two. Venous thrombosis in legs and arms very well detected by ultrasound. Thrombosis can occur in varicose veins as well as deep veins. If deep venous thrombosis present, the effect of medical therapy is also followed by ultrasound.

Yes.: Varicose veins are by definition superficial in most cases, although cases of deeper pelvic varicose veins occur & can be seen with ultrasound. Types of veins include superficial, deep, and perforating veins connecting the two. Venous disease in teh legs and arms are very well detected by ultrasound, whereas deeper vein pathology may require a special CT, MRI, or catheter angiogram to detect.

Venous ultrasound: A venous ultrasound is the gold standard for visualizing both the superficial and deep veins from the groin to the ankle. About the groin it becomes difficult to see the deep veins because of the bones in the area and the depth of the venous structures. There are other tests to see these veins above the groin.
