Two main classes: The two main classes of over the counter pain relievers are acetaminophen (Tylenol) & NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, & aspirin). Aspirin works slightly differently & another sub-class of NSAIDs are COX-2 inhibitors (vioxx, Celebrex). The side effect profiles and potency for different types of pain, depend mostly on the class of drug, so the reasons for trying a different type should discuss w/ doc

Naproxen: excluding acetaminophen (Tylenol ) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) does not leave many other OTC'choices. However I have found that patients who do not respond well to ibuprofen often respond well to naproxen . It is available OTC (Aleve) .It comes as a 275mg tab . If pain is sever I would take 2 tabs 550mg .(The presciption high dose is 500mg )
