Yes and no: Some people are born with one atrophied kidney, and one normal kidney. The atrophic kidney works poorly, if at all, but the normal kidney gets a bit bigger and compensates. Thus, overall kidney function is usually normal. One kidney is all you need. Just ask any kidney donor or recipient!
