Avulsion: Means torn tissue. Taping or brace or boot or crutch or cane are all considerations.

Splint/cast: Avulsion means the sprained ligament has torn off a small piece of the bone it attaches to. If it is painful, may need to be immobilized with a brace or cast. Depends upon the degree.
