Avulsion: Means torn tissue. Taping or brace or boot or crutch or cane are all considerations.

Splint/cast: Avulsion means the sprained ligament has torn off a small piece of the bone it attaches to. If it is painful, may need to be immobilized with a brace or cast. Depends upon the degree.

Avulsion fracture: MOST avulsion fractures (where a piece of bone comes off when a ligament tears off the bone) are very small and benign and do not require surgical repair. There are cases, however, when the bone fragments are large (particularly with the 5th met base in the foot) and require surgical intervention, or if the ligament is no longer performing its function (stability of the joint),
