Ibuprofen dosing: Generally the recommended dose for an adult for pain is 400 mg every 6-8 hours. This is usually a high enough dose. Hopefully using this dose for 3-4 days will manage your problem. It can be irritating to the stomach and should not be used if you have trouble with your liver or kidneys. Check the strength of your tablets. It may be your doctor was recommending 200 mg strength tablets?

Yes: Over the counter ibuprofen is 200 mg per pill. That is 600 mg if you take 3. Maximum dose is 800 mg. Before it became over the counter 600 mg and 800 mg dosing was common.
