No good number: The target needs to be somewhere between the child's normal, baseline hemoglobin value and the hemoglobin level that relieves his symptoms. After transfusion he should be calm, feed normally, have a normal heart rate, and have good color. Once that is achieved he will need some time to get back to his normal hemoglobin. Over-transfusing or transfusing too fast can create other problems.
