Depends in growth: Hgb E-beta thalassemia is a thalassemia syndrome that results in highly variable clinical symptoms. A minority of these patients are transfusion independent. The majority are intermittently dependent on transfusions. More recently, it has become apparent that these patients can grow and develop adequately with lower Hgb values (as low as 6). Inadequate growth is the criteria for transfusion.
