Not given alone.: Many years ago, hodgkin lymphoma was treated with radiation alone with good success, but only certain stages. More modern treatment always includes chemotherapy, and may also include radiation, especially in patients with bulky lymph node tumors. Cure rate depends on stage, but in favorable patients is well over 90%.

The success rate: With hd treated with XRT alone for stage i&iia was quite excellent: 85-90% cure. The problem was selection with staging laparotomy to rule out usually sub-diaphragmatic disease and second malignancies and toxcities were much worse. Toxicity and 2nd malignancy makes chem best choise, XRT added to lower dose, smaller fields for bulky disease.
