Orthopedic surgeon: I believe that you should notify your orthopedic surgeon about this symptom as he/she would want to know of any postoperative discomfort.

Post-ACL surgery: It may be scar tissue or knee maltracking related which will improve with physical therapy over time. There is also arthritis of the joint that can cause a crackling sensation in the knee. If there is no pain or instability, and there was no additional injury, it may be normal. If pain or instability occur, see Ortho right away.
