Nerve pinch vs other: If always on the same side, in same location, then it could very well be a nerve pinch - somewhere along the nerve that serves that area could be getting pinched - maybe a joint or a nerve tunnel. If it's bilateral, and differing locations, then could be more general problem like neck disk or arthritis problems or even neuropathy (progressive slow nerve degeneration). Would get checked.

Couple thoughts: Without an actual examination, I cannot give specific medical advice on your particular health but, there's two broad categories of numbness. sick nerves like from diabetes, thyroid, etc. affects multiple areas, and the tips of longest nerves. Pinched nerves hit ONE area and go outward from the injury. You describe two different things. REALLY sick nerves could be... and stron reason for check up
