Filter: Sounds like you were having trouble with blood thinners and were bleeding into your lungs. The greenfield filter does help to prevent clots from going to the lung. However, people with greenfield filters still get pulmonary embolus so they are not 100% effective.

No thats its purpose: A greenfield filter is a screen placed in the inferior vena cava, the main vein returning blood to the right side of the heart. It is used in patients who are particularly vulnerable to pulmonary embolism, such as those diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis who, like you, cant be anticoagulated, to prevent venous emboli (clots) from entering the pulmonary circulation.
