It should: Often colds and upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses and the cough is very often the last thing to improve after dealing with one of these infections. As long as it's dry I wouldn't worry about further infection or possibly a bacterial superinfection on top of it. You could try OTC cough meds like Delsym, (dextromethorphan) or even ask your doctor for benzonatate pills to take during the day to help.

Yes: Often times an upper respiratory infection or bronchitis will leave residual lung or airway inflammation for even several weeks. It should eventually go away. If it doesn't, see your doctor, because you may have a bacterial infection and may need antibiotics. Hope this helps!

Time: After an upper respiratory infection it can take multiple weeks for inflammation to subside. Increase water intake and consider OTC Dextromethorphan. If persistent, see your physician.
