Life-long treatment.: Currently therapies osteoporisis are decently effective, but require long-term treatment. Medications can be given once a wk, once a month, or even 2x/year options, but calcium supplements/vit d, and weight-bearing exercises are also very important and these require more committment. You/mom should consult with doc for best therapy for her. Good luck.

Taking medication: osteoporosis is a silent disease and does not cause symptoms in the absence of fracture. Medications can help with osteoporosis, and has shown to help significantly with preventing fractures. Patients are worried about the rare side effects, and do not want to take the medication.Counseling patient's to make them understand regarding the consequences of untreated osteoporosis is important.
