Mainly palpation: Most doctors will examine by palpation method, (step 4 in the "5 steps in a breast self exam." in a lying down position without a bra, often under or through a thin exam gown. It may include a brief visual exam as well. A more detailed exam may be done if a nodule is felt. Quick!: This is simply to chek the stage of sexual development and look for any abnormalities. It. Should be quick and painless. You will likely be provided a gown so that both breast are not exposed at the same time. Also a chaperone and/or parent will likely be in the exam room. Ask your doctor to talk through each step.

Breast exam: The MD will inspect the breasts for asymmetry, discoloration, dimpling and abnormal texture. As with all breast exams the MD will then palpate the breast tissue for any abnormalities, masses or areas of tenderness. Your 13 year old should be taught to do self breast exams as well.
